About the Australian Deafness Directory

The Australian Deafness Directory has been compiled to assist Deaf
people and people with Hearing Impairment, their families and friends,
and all who work with them. It is hoped that it will fill the need
for a quick and accurate guide to many organisations and services
of and for Deaf people and people with a Hearing Impairment in Australia.

How to Use the Directory
- If you know the name of the organisation or agency you are seeking, and want the address, phone / fax number, or other information, click straight to the Alphabetical Listings section of the Directory at the top of this page. The organisations are listed alphabetically there by name, with all other information following.
- If you wish to see what services or clubs are available in a particular State or Territory, click on the State of choice on the left hand side of this page. This links to all current listings and categories in that state (sporting groups, schools, etc). Then, just click on the organisation or service of choice to link to more detailed information.
- If you are searching for a particular type of service or organisation, then it may be quicker to choice to view the Directory by organisation. This links to all current listings in all states in that category. As above, just click on the organisation or service of choice to link to more detailed information.
Some examples of ways in which the Directory can be used are:
- Deaf people and their families moving to new locations will have quick information about the clubs and services available to them.
- Those who work for agencies such as schools, parent organisations, support groups, churches and others will be able to see at a glance other organisations working in the same field and will be able to contact them easily.
- Mailing lists can be easily and comprehensively updated using the Directory. Parents of Deaf children will have readily accessible information about the educational services and provisions available for their children, support for themselves, and the many Deaf community organisations open to their children.
- Those involved in research of study will have a useful indication of sources for information and materials.
The Directory aims to be as comprehensive as possible. However some decisions had to be made about content. The focus is on organisations of and for Deaf people and people with hearing impairment.
With a few exceptions, the Directory does not include the following:
- Government departments or agencies and educational organisations which serve Deaf or hearing impaired people in addition to a wide range of other clients.
- General disability organisations or service agencies which focus on a variety of disabilities.
- Local Deaf sports clubs or teams, which can be contacted through State Deaf Sports Associations or Deaf Sports Australia.
- Private hearing aid companies (these can be found in the Yellow Pages of local telephone directories).
- Individuals or Home Pages maintained by individuals.
Updates
This Directory is updated as often as electronic requests are received. Only updates by authorised people in each organisation can be accepted. This Directory is only as good as your input into it, and is provided as a community service. It is inevitable that some organisations may be missing and others may have closed or their details changed and we were not notified.
With your help and interest, the Australian Deafness Directory will remain comprehensive and accurate and relevant.
Terminology and Acknowledgements
The
terminology (eg. deaf, Deaf, Hearing Impaired/ment,Hard of Hearing, etc)
used throughout the Directory is that provided by the organisations themselves
when giving information about their services or activities. Any apparent
inconsistencies are a result of the range of meanings attributed to some
of these terms by such a wide variety of organisations and individuals.
Many individuals have been involved in compiling and updating this hard copies of this directory. Special thanks are due to: Breda Carty and Des Power, for their work on compiling the first edition and re-print.
